Award-winning author Binyavanga Wainaina has said that he will marry his unnamed boyfriend, a Nigerian early next year.
This statement is against the values of the country where homosexuality is illegal.
The 47-year-old said via Twitter,
“I knelt down and asked my love for his hand in marriage … I am beside myself with excitement that he has agreed to spend the rest of his life with me”
Wainaina and his Nigerian boyfriend have been together for five years.
The wedding will take place in South Africa, a country that condones same-sex marriage.
In 2014, he wrote an article titled “I am a homosexual, mom”.
