Association of Nigeria, CAN,
have organised peaceful
protests, insisting that Fulani
herdsmen must leave their
communities and also rejected
the proposed bill for grazing
reserve.
In fact, CAN in Enugu State
described the proposed bill as
a ‘private business’ that should
not be allowed to see the light of
the day.
The Christian communities
in separate events stated
their grievances against the
nefarious activities of Fulani
herdsmen who have in recent
times endangered the lives and
property of residents.
Ebonyi State CAN Chairman,
Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Nshii, who
spoke on behalf of the body
during a peaceful protest in
Abakaliki, stated that there is no
grazing land in the state. “We,
Igbos, also rear cattle, but due to
lack of land, we tie them up. We
therefore declare that our land
is entirely for the cultivation of
rice, cassava and yam.”
The protesters, who carried
placards with various
inscriptions such as ‘Fulani
herdsmen and their destruction’,
‘killing is unlawful’, ‘Disarm
Fulani herdsmen’, ‘cattle rearing
is private business’, lStop killing
innocent farmers, ‘Let Fulani
herdsmen leave our farmers
alone’, ‘We are farmers we need
more land’ among others, called
on God to protect and bless
Ebonyi State from the hands of
evil people.
The chairman recommended
that “Fulani herdsmen should
leave our land, they must go,
let them go to enable us key
into the federal government’s
agenda. The federal government
should do all in its power to stop
herdsmen from carrying arms,
killing innocent Nigerians and
destroying peoples’ property.
Most worrisome is that any
attempt to stop them from
destruction of our crops leads to
violence and the destruction of
our houses.”
In Enugu, the association
made its stance known at the
Government House, during a
peaceful protest to condemn and
register their grievances over the
unfortunate killing, maiming,
raping and destruction of
property of innocent residents
by suspected Fulani herdsmen,
especially the recent attack on
Nimbo Community in Uzo-
Uwani Local Government Area.
Addressing Governor
Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the state
Chairman of CAN, Rt. Rev.
Christian Obiefuna, who was
accompanied by other notable
clergy such as the Archbishop
of the Ecclesiastical Province of
Enugu (Anglican Communion),
Most Rev. Emmanuel
Chukwuma, Archbishop of the
Methodist Church of Nigeria,
Enugu Diocese, Most Rev.
Christopher Ede, among others
