Federal Ministry of Health said it will work with the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to improve on emergency response in the country and in the rebuilding of health facilities in the North-East ravaged by insurgency.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said this yesterday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the director-general of the agency.
The minister explained that he was in the agency to seek cooperation in rebuilding health care centres in the North-East to include trauma centres. He added that health facilities in the zone will have counselling units to care for the emotional and mental health of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States.
Osagie noted that there is need for coordinated emergency response to avoid overlapping of duties, adding that it will help in saving more lives in situations where there is need for multiple emergency response.
Responding, the Director-General, NEMA, Alhaji Sani Sidi, appreciated the minister for his commitment, adding that this is the first time that the ministry is seeking the collaboration of an agency in improving emergency response in the country.
Sani said there is need for the ministry to improve on psycho-social support for traumatised persons, especially as some of them would return home after the reconstruction of their community. He also noted that children and expectant mothers in IDP camps need medical attention and assured the minister of the full cooperation of the agency to improve emergency response and health facilities.
