The Akwa Ibom State government has debunked claims by the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, that it blew up a major Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC pipeline in Oruk Anam Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom.

At 7am, the NDA, via twitter, announced that it blew up an NNPC pipeline in Akwa Ibom, at 4am.

However, in a statement signed by the Information Officer of the government, Idris Mabadeje, the AKSG said when the state minister of Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umana visited the site, it turned out to be an eruption caused by an old leaking pipeline belonging to the Nigerian Gas Company, NGC.

He called for the people of the area to remain calm, saying; “There is no iota of truth in the claims making rounds in the social media.

“No pipeline has been bombed in Akwa Ibom State” adding that “those peddling such rumours are ignorant of the true situation in the affected area.”

“As at Thursday morning, when security operatives and officials of the State government visited Ikot Osute, the state Ministry of Environment, NGC personnel and other gas companies operating the area were on site, working round the clock to ensure safety in the area.”

The statement by Umanah, throws up questions over the authenticity of previous claims by the Avengers, who until last week, had claimed responsibility for the alleged bombing of several oil facilities in the Niger Delta region.

Umanah enjoined the Akwa Ibom people and Nigerians, to remain calm and go about their businesses, inistsing that government remains committed to protecting lives and property of all citizens in the State.

He assured that security agents have cordoned off the area to forestall against any eventuality.
