After five years of being incarcerated for an offence he knew nothing about, 37-year-old Ajayi Adetola, a man with physical disability, could once again experience what it feels like to be free.

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja in December 2017 discharged and acquitted him of the charges preferred against him five years after he was arraigned on counts of robbery, stealing and conspiracy by operatives of the Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The SARS operatives had in 2012 arrested one Rashidi Sikiru, who was Adetola’s acquaintance. Sikiru was arrested for stealing a vehicle. But during his interrogation in police custody, due to the torture and the enormous pressure mounted on him to give them a name, Sikiru mentioned Adetola as an accomplice.

This led to his arrest and arraignment in court. But while Adetola had sufficiently languished in prison custody, Sikiru…
