GBENGA ADENIJI writes about the plight of the remaining ex-refugees in the sleepy Oru-Ijebu community in the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State

Like a decorated effigy, Teta Tokpa stared at nothing in particular as the sun cruelly beamed its ray on the wheelchair she was in. Even the gentle cries from her little daughter, held tenderly by an elderly man seated nearby, couldn’t distract her.

Tokpa is one of the remaining ex-refugees in the former Oru-Ijebu Refugee Camp currently living in a makeshift building within the former camp. The camp was declared closed by the Federal Government on July 1, 2007.

As her colleagues engage in different jobs to survive the harsh economic climate, the fair-skinned Liberian cannot go anywhere because she is physically challenged. She ponders and wonders in her wheelchair all day as children play gaily and adults throw banters at one…
