An April 14, 2014, the Boko Haram insurgents attacked the Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State and abducted 276 female students who were sitting for their West African School Certificate Examination. About 57 of the girls escaped leaving 219 girls. It took a toll on Nigeria and called to question the value the President Goodluck Jonathan government placed on the lives of Nigerians. The inaction led in greater part to the loss of election of the Peoples Democratic Party government in 2015.
In May 2016, one of the missing girls, Amina Ali, was found. Some 21 girls were freed in October 2016, while another one was rescued the following month. One more girl was found in January 2017. With the government negotiating, 82 more girls were freed in May 2017 and the last one to be rescued was in January 2018.
