Lottery operators fail to remit N1.4tn to FG –Reps panel – Punch Newspapers

The House of Representatives Committee on Governmental Affairs said on Monday that about N1.493tn revenue due to the Federal Government was not remitted by lottery operators in the country in the last 11 years.

The committee made the disclosure at the National Assembly in Abuja as it began a public hearing on weak regulations and abuses in the sector.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Husseini Suleiman-Kanagiwa, told the session that Nigeria, with over 180 million population, could only realise N700m annually from lottery and gaming.

Describing the performance as “abysmal,” the committee said it translated to only N7.7bn in remittances, out of the estimated N1.5tn across the first 11 years of operation.

The committee made a comparison with the situation in some African countries with far smaller population than Nigeria.
