Uganda bus-tractor crash toll rises to 48, says Red Cross – Punch Newspapers

Forty-eight people died after a bus smashed into a tractor driving with no lights at night and a truck in northern Uganda, a Red Cross spokeswoman said on Saturday.

Irene Nakasiita told AFP the victims of the late Friday crash included 16 children. The accident happened in Kiryandongo, about 220 kilometres (140 miles) north of the capital Kampala.

“Evacuation teams are working tirelessly to rescue the injured”, said Ugandan police spokeswoman Emilian Kayima, adding that all three drivers had died.

The accident happened on Friday night in Kiryandongo, about 220 kilometres (140 miles) north of the capital Kampala.

The bus collided first with the tractor before hitting a truck transporting beer.

Local media said the death toll exceeded 30.
