Britain’s former world number one Andy Murray was made to work up serious sweat by unheralded Zhang Zhizhen at the ATP Shenzhen Open on Tuesday before the Chinese player retired at 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 4-2.
It was a disappointing end to a spirited display from Zhang, a 21-year-old from Shanghai who is ranked 340th but who raised hopes of an upset for local fans in the second set.
He cramped up and was unable to continue just after Murray had broken serve to take a 4-2 lead in the final set.
Murray, 31, has had his own 2018 campaign derailed following hip surgery in April and had come to China with a 5-4 record after returning to the tour in June.
