The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has banned the use of smartphones and cameras within voting cubicles.

This was made known in a statement by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, to clarify the reports on the ban of smartphones during elections.

Following the INEC stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday, on the 2018 Osun governorship election, INEC released an excerpt of the chairman’s speech on the ban of phones and cameras in voting.

The statement read: “Therefore, it is counter-productive for the commission to introduce a blanket ban on the use of mobile phones or other photographic devices at polling units on election day.

“What we have done is to exclude the use of such devices by accredited voters from the time they collect their ballot papers, mark them in the voting cubicles and drop in the ballot box.
