In a landmark ruling, South Africa’s highest court on Tuesday legalised the use of cannabis by adults in private places.

Hundreds of Pro-marijuana activists cheered in the public gallery and chanted “Weed are free now”, when the Constitutional Court gave its landmark ruling.

South Africa’s government’s had initially opposed its legalisation, arguing the drug was “harmful” to people’s health.

However, In a unanimous ruling, judges also legalised the growing of marijuana for private consumption.

In a similar fashion, presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Action Congress  (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, had said last month that if elected, he would decriminalise marijuana use.

He said people were making billions from the plant while Nigeria was lagging behind.
