The tradition of stealing plaques or money prizes from real winners of contests and giving same to ‘arranged winners’ is fast becoming a fad in Nigeria with numerous tales of sad episodes dotting blogs and newspaper pages. Some months ago in Port harcourt, Rivers State (Southern Nigeria) organizers of ‘Miss Polo’ did same to one Miss Adeola, winner of that contest. The Parent of the lady are still battling to reclaim both their daughter’s money prize and 1st Winner Status which has been allegedly given to the girl who won 3rd.
However, the recent Access Bank’s Lagos City Marathon tagged “Run Lagos” which held in Lagos on Saturday February 10th was polluted with this sad “Rob Peter to pay Paul” culture as some of the organizers in conjunction with DMS, a security outfit tried to give the TWO MILLION Naira award for winner of the 42klm (Nigeria Category) MARY AKOR to an “Arranged Winner”. But the very alerted Lady who hails from Benue State rejected the day light fraud. The role an ex-Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, One Barrister Bukola Olopade aka Ozogula played in the entire saga is quite disheartening. Watch the video.
