Cholera remains one of the killer diseases and a public health challenge in Nigeria, more than ever before, the campaign to stem the scourge calls for increased efforts by all stakeholders. PATIENCE IVIE IHEJIRIKA writes.
Nigeria’s running battle with cholera is well documented. Despite concerted efforts by government and other stakeholders to ensure its eradication, the cholera disease which is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called ‘Vibrio cholerae’ has continued to claim thousands of human lives, old and young, especially in rural areas.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) weekly epidemic report (week 20) on cholera, shows that there were 190 suspected cases with 17 laboratory confirmed cases and 17 deaths reported from 11 LGAs in seven States; Adawama has 100 cases, Bauchi has 22 cases, Borno has 20 cases, FCT has one case, Kaduna has two cases, Kano has 44 cases and Zamfara has one case in week 20, 2018 compared with three…
