UN Warns Nigeria Against Exclusion Of Female Candidates — Leadership Newspaper

The United Nations human rights experts have cautioned Nigeria against the exclusion of female candidates during the just concluded primaries elections in the state and national level. The chair, UN human rights special procedures, Ms Ivana Radačić who disclosed this in Geneva yesterday enjoined the affected political parties to take urgent steps to remedy the deliberate exclusion. She expressed disappointment with the report of denying female candidates access to essential information on the election, cancelling and rescheduling primaries with the alleged aim of excluding female candidates. Radačić called on federal government to fully investigate the allegations and to ensure that women candidates who have been unfairly or illegally excluded are given access to appropriate remedies. Also speaking, the vice chair of UN body, Ms Meskerem Geset Techane warned the relevant authorities to avoid the repetition of such irregularities in the 2019 general elections.
