Super Falcons

For retaining their position as the top female national side in Africa and qualifying for the women’s World Cup in France in 2019, the Super Falcons are worthy winners of LEADERSHIP Sportspersons of the Year 2018 award.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons again proved their supremacy in African football by winning the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) for the ninth time.

The team defeated South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-3 on penalties at the 11th AWCON in Ghana, on December 1, 2018, after a keenly contested 120-minute football that ended in a goalless draw. The Super Falcons, which had qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women Cup by reaching the AWCON final, retained the trophy for the third consecutive time.

The Nigerian girls won the first six editions (1998, 2000, 20002, 2004, 2006 and 2008) of the competition. In 2010, they were, however, toppled in the semi-finals in their seventh attempt by hosts Equatorial Guinea who went on to defeat South Africa in…
