Nigeria joined the rest of the world in promoting activities to bring attention of the government, stakeholders and the populace to the nagging issue of global water crisis and what can be done to mitigate the effects of this crisis.
For Nigeria, poor access to water and sanitation is one of the major reasons for the high mortality rate in children under five. Contaminated drinking water and poor sanitation increase the risk of children contacting water-borne diseases. For Nigeria to overcome these challenges, it needs to allocate at least 1.7 per cent of its GDP to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for its citizens.
