As Nigerians take stock of the outcome of the 2019 elections, stakeholders have lamented that the 2019 elections were not fair to women.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, Senior Programmes Officer, YIAGA Africa Centre for Legislative Engagement, Yetunde Bakare said, “While 2,970 women ran for various elective positions in the recently concluded elections, only 57 were elected, representing 3 per cent of the total candidates who vied for various offices”.
The programmes officer who spoke on the sidelines of “The Reflection On How Women Fared In The 2019 General Elections” in Abuja yesterday said, “The number of women who ran for various offices was very high, the highest in the history of our democracy. However, from the high cost of nomination forms, even though some parties gave discounts, the discount was abysmal, so a lot of women could not afford the cost for the nomination and expression of interests form.”
