Agugu Community: Where Mothers Beat Odds To Keep Their Babies Alive

Every mother’s dream is to raise their children in good health until they are able to fend for themselves. But in most developing countries, Nigeria included, this dream is almost unrealisable especially for rural women. In this report, ODIRI UCHENUNU-IBEH examines. the hurdles mothers go through to avert maternal, newborn and child death in Oyo State.

Mrs Funke Adenike could have stayed back at home and not get her daughter – whom she gave birth to few hours ago – immunised. But thankfully, she did not.

Under the scorching sun, she waited patiently and happily – gently rocking the baby on her back – for her turn so that her daughter could get a life-saving shot.

“I have to do this for my daughter. Our community leaders and some women have constantly told us during pregnancy that we should go to public health facilities to give birth.
