Nigerians react as Bayelsa state House of Assembly approves N500,000 life pension bill for past and present lawmakers

Nigerians are currently reacting to the new law passed by members of the Bayelsa state House of Assembly that all past and present lawmakers will henceforth be entitled to lifetime pension.

The lawmakers passed the bill into law on Wednesday April 24th after the Leader of the House, Peter Akpe, representing Sagbama Constituency 1, moved the motion for the debate.  The bill proposed a monthly pension of N100,000 for members while the speaker and deputy speaker would be entitled to N500,000 and N200,000, respectively throughout their life after serving in the Assembly.

Nigerians are however enraged by the bill. Many believe it is insensitive of the Assembly which is dominated by PDP members, to pass such a bill when the state residents are yet to reap the dividends of democracy. Some Nigerians argue that the lawmakers are not civil servants and are not entitiled to pension.
