Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed his country had “zero tolerance” for anti-Semitism on Thursday, and said his government would cooperate with Israel in fighting the phenomenon during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We are ready to cooperate in everything connected to the war against anti-Semitism and we think that one of its forms of anti-Semitism is expressions against the state of Israel,” Orban said in remarks translated from Hungarian to Hebrew.
“In Hungary there is zero tolerance toward any anti-Semitic expression. All Jewish Hungarian citizens are under the protection of the government,” Orban added.
The visit – Orban’s first to Israel as prime minister – is a sign of strong ties between the controversial Hungarian statesman and Netanyahu, who shares Orban’s conservative, anti-immigrant outlook.
