83-year-old Akure Chief strangled to death


EIGHTY-THREE years old
patriarch, Chief Dada Oyateru, the
Ayalode of Akure Kingdom, was
strangled to death, recently at his
residence located at Oke-Ijebu area
of the Ondo State capital, Akure,
by unknown men.
According to his second wife,
Mrs. Titilola Oyateru, a gang of
three armed men gained access
into the royal father’s bedroom
after breaking into the house by
1:00am. They had succeeded in
cutting the burglary proof that
secured the staircase to the upstairs
where the bedroom is located and
held the family hostage for about
four hours.
Narrating their ordeal, the junior
of the late royal father said, “They
pointed their guns at baba and
demanded for the money which
he brought home the previous
night. He pleaded with them that
he didn’t have any money at home
and usually doesn’t keep money
at home too, but they refused to
yield to his pleadings, instead
threatened to kill us if we didn’t
give them money,” she said.
Titilola recalled that the deceased
was to go for medical check-up at
the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, a
day earlier, but couldn’t go because
he had no money on him as a result
of the recent nationwide strike that
paralysed bank operations and
other business transactions.
“He begged them not to kill him,
imploring them to go with his two
cars and promised to go to the bank
the following day to withdraw
money from his bank account. Baba
begged them and suggested thjat he
would be willing to drop the money
at wherever point they wanted him
to drop the money for them the
following day, but they insisted that
they would kill him if he didn’t give
them money that night.”
The junior wife narrated that
the bandits tied the deceased with
ropes and asked them to lie down
with their faces to the ground,
and subsequently pounced on the
octogenarian, twisting his neck
round thereby stifled life out of him.

ransacked the whole house and
everyone, carted away valuables
such as laptops, phones, jewelleries
and the sum of N35, 000 cash,
