Katsina: Fistula centre treats 400,000 VVF patients

Fistula Centre, Babar Ruga in
Katsina State, has treated and
rehabilitated over 400,000 Visco
Vagina Fistule, VVF patients since
its inspection in 1984.
The Managing Director of the
centre, Dr. Aliyu Mohammed
El-ladan, in an interview said
yesterday that the centre provides
treatment to 600 VVF patients
yearly. “We have three qualified
consultants providing treatment to
four to five VVF patients daily.”
Dr. El-Ladan said the Federal
Ministry of Health would soon
conduct a survey to identify the
actual number of VVF patients
in the country noting that the
survey will assist the government
to budget and provide the needed
facilities for the treatment of VVF
patients.
He said current statistics
indicated that states in the North
East Zone have the highest cases of
VVF in Nigeria.
Dr. El-Ladan also confirmed
that said the centre has introduced
rehabilitation programme for the
patients who had successfully
undergoing medical operation.
“We trained them in soap making,
knitting, cake baking, pomade as
well as provide cash assistance to
them,” he said stressing that the
training programme was conducted
in collaboration with Katsina State
government and Millennium
Development Goal, MDG.
He noted the contributions of
some wealthy individuals who
provided food and other assistance
to the patients.
The Medical Director sited an
example of construction of one of
the largest rehabilitation centre in
Africa by former First Lady, Hajiya
Turai Yar’adua and called on the
state government to rehabilitate
some of the buildings at the
centre to provide an environment
conducive for the patients.
