The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Thursday in Abuja urged the Labour Movement to unite and work together in order to play a more constructive role in galvanising human and material resources for national development.
Ngige made the call during the 10th Triennial National Delegates Conference of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with the Theme: “Labour and National Re-Orientation, The Change We Want”.
He said that there was the need for all players within industrial unions to play by the rules and embrace the principle of social dialogue as a tool for conflict resolution.
“I have observed with dismay the growing inter-and intra-union squabbles which had eroded union solidarity and cooperation.
“Let us learn to close ranks and work together for the common good of the country and our members in general.”
The minister further urged labour unions to move away from confrontation to consensus for the growth of the movement and for the common good of the country.
He noted with dismay that corruption made it difficult to rebuild dilapidated infrastructure and revive the nation’s economy.
He urged other trade unions to synergize with the present administration in tackling corruption in all its ramifications, to improve the living standard of Nigerians and attain an egalitarian and prosperous nation.
Ngige commended TUC under the leadership of Bobboi Kaigama, whom, he said, had performed creditably in ensuring the maintenance of stable industrial relations.
“Let me commened the TUC for its understanding in the current circumstances the country is passing through.”
He urged the congress to continue to demonstrate this sense of patriotism in its engagement with government.”
Furthermore, the minister urged TUC to conduct its proceedings at the conference with maturity and never allow personal interest to overshadow the common destiny and life of the union.
