Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has vowed to recover diverted funds and other resources donated by International humanitarian organisations to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, across the country.
Acting Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, who warned against all such diversions, said that the commission will spare no effort to recover funds and materials diverted by unscrupulous persons.
According to him, anyone caught in the act will be treated as a criminal and appropriately handed over to the police for subsequent prosecution.
Magu, who expressed worry over complaints of corruption in IDP camps, noted that the commission aims at ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of the resources meant for IDPs.
“We want to be sure that there is transparency, accountability and judicious use of the money allocated to Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri and elsewhere.
“What we are doing is gathering intelligence but the culprits behind the sufferings in the IDP camps will be invited sooner or later by the EFCC,” he said, adding that plans are afoot to mobilise women to buy into the fight against corruption.
“I will bring in civil societies and women groups in Borno State in the fight against corruption and we will equally organise a workshop for them similar to the one we did for children in Abuja, so as to educate them on the ills of corruption, ” Magu stated.
The EFCC boss, who stated this during a visit to the re-opened zonal office of the commission in Maiduguri, said complaints from international humanitarian organisations and other civil society organisations of the alleged diversion will not be taken with kid gloves.
