Provost of the College Of Education, Gwanje-Akwanga, a privately owned school in Nasarawa State, Musa Juan, has advocated the extension of funding of public tertiary institutions through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, to cover their privately owned counterparts.
He argued that there was no justification for the exclusion of private tertiary institutions in TETFUND interventions as both public and private institutions were aiming at the same purpose of providing the manpower needs and general educational advancement of the nation.
He further said, while playing host to the leadership of the Nasarawa State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists who were on assessment visit to the college, that TETFUND was being financed by tax payers’ money, adding that it was unfair for government to restrict its interventions to only public tertiary institutions.
He explained that the institution, which is the second largest private college of education in Nigeria, was established in 2006 with the aim of complementing government’s efforts in the development of manpower in the country, adding that the college had so far graduated seven sets.
“Here we impact sound moral and academic knowledge to our students in line with our vision and mission and that is why our graduates have continued to excel in their endeavours. We have been receiving good reports about their performances.”
He revealed that as a private institution, the college was faced with the challenge of funding as it relies solely on tuition fees from students to carry out projects and payment of staff salaries and appealed to government, nongovernmental organisations and spirited individuals to assist the school to enable it achieve its aims and objectives.
