founder of Visafone Communications Limited, Mr. Jim Ovia, said that the telephone company was sold to MTN because the country’s broadband penetration is poor and does not encourage Code Division Multiple Access technology.
Mr. Ovia who stated this recently in Abuja during the Digital Africa Conference and Exhibition said little or lack of internet connectivity was killing businesses in the country, adding that internet of everything cannot take place when there is no broadband.
He said, “We have a lot of devices and now some of them are dead equipment because there is no connectivity. Connectivity is very important and without connectivity, internet of things or everything cannot take place.
“We need connectivity by way of broadband and we need it by way of fibre optics to give you the broadband, or may be a wireless or may be the spectrum of 800 that gives you the broadband speed that you need today and so you can understand now why Visafone sold its network to MTN.”
He said the “internet has given us the opportunity to connect in ways we could never have dreamed possible. The Internet of Things will take us beyond connection to become part of a living, moving, global nervous system. Whether you are an individual, technology developer or adopter of these technologies, the Internet of Things will stretch the boundaries of today’s systems,” he said
