Minister of transportation, Chibuike Amaechi has assured the International Maritime Organization, IMO, and Nigerian maritime stakeholders that government will continue to abide by all the IMO conventions as it is prepared to turn around the maritime industry.
The minister gave the assurance recently while declaring open the Nigeria’s IMO Member State Audit Scheme, IMSAS, in Abuja.
Amaechi, who was represented at the occasion by the permanent secretary in the ministry of transport, Mr. Sabiu Zakaria, appealed to the IMO auditors to guide appropriately in the areas where the country is found lacking in the implementation of the applicable instrument.
“I wish to appeal to our distinguished IMO Auditors that though we have sufficiently prepared for this audit, they should be encouraged to guide us appropriately in the areas we have been found deficient in the implementation of the applicable instrument,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Mr. Dakuku Peterside, applauded the minister for making Nigeria to occupy its rightful place in the international maritime community.
He also commended the Nigerian Navy for making the country’s waterways safe and secure.
Nigeria is a member of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, which is a specialised United Nations Agency that is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of shipping and protection of the maritime environment.
