Centre recruits 50,000 blood donors in 4 states


Transfusion Service, NBTS, says
it has recruited 50,000 voluntary
blood donors in the four states
under the North-Central Zone.
Dr Obadiah Damulak, the
Coordinator of the zone, disclosed
this in Jos on Friday when he
visited the Speaker, Plateau House
of Assembly, Mr. Peter Azi.
He said that blood donation
was necessary succour for victims
of accidents or others who need
blood during emergency in the
zone comprising Benue, Bauchi,
Nasarawa and Plateau states.
Damulak said the NBTS opted
to visit the lawmakers to intimate
them on its activities as well as
keep them abreast on the essence of
constant blood donation.
He attributed the success of the
recruitment drive to “massive and
aggressive awareness campaigns
carried out by the centre,” he said,
stressing that the zone has one of the
most effective and progressive blood
transfusion centres in the country.
“We also have 100,000 units of
blood available to save lives that
will be in dire need. Nigeria is in a
crisis period and the need for blood
has continued to rise; hence our
commitment to meet that need.
“Recently, we gave 300 units
of blood to Maiduguri from our
own blood bank; clearly we are
succeeding in our mission,”
he said, adding that the blood
screening machine at the centre
was of world standard, stressing
that much attention was usually
paid to details to ensure accuracy.

inadequate personnel, limited
funds, lack of vehicles and offices as
well as lack of some key equipment

House of Assembly to make a bill
that would regulate the donation
and reception of blood, even as
he appealed to the general public
to save lives by donating blood
Meanwhile, the Speaker has
promised that the legislature
would look into the challenges
facing the centre with a view to
addressing them.

more enlightenment programmes
should be carried out to create
necessary awareness on the need
