MINISTER of Women Affairs
and Social Development, Senator
Aisha Jummai Alhassan, has said
that the Nigerian girl –child is still
faced with persistent challenges in
accessing education.
Speaking at a symposium to
mark the 2016 National Children’s
Day celebration, in the country,
Alhassan urged parents to send
girls to school because of the
benefits therein.
“Girl – child education will
lead to economic and political
emancipation of women who
become well informed of their
rights and how best to access them.
“We strongly believe that
children have the right to be
protected from all forms of
violence, abuse, neglect and
exploitation as provided for in the
Child Rights Act, 2003.”
She said that government, the
ministry and other stakeholders
have generated accurate and
reliable data through the National
Survey in 2014, adding that the
data would help in ensuring
practical approach in addressing
all forms of violence against
children in the country.
She said the culture of silence in
respect of violence against children
was embedded in societal norms
and practices. She said that the
ministry was tackling such now,
adding that violent acts against
children which were considered
a taboo are now openly discussed
and addressed.
“As mothers and managers
of our homes, child protection
begins with us in our homes, as
mothers are the first teachers to
the children and should do all that
is necessary to protect them from
falling victims of violence
