FG pledges sustainable mgt of River Basins


Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to reposition the River Basin Development Authorities,RBDAs, for sustainable development.
Minister of Water Resources, Engrossed. Suleiman Adamu stated this over the weekend during the official signing of a contract agreement between the RBDAs and the Songjai Nigeria Partnership Limited.
According to the Minister, the strengthening of the RBDAs will go a long way to boost food security, generate employment and aid in the management of the available water resources using best practices for intergrated rural development..
He stated that the agreement resolves around what is called Graduate Employment Scheme and Farm Settlement Schemes which will be located in each of the 109 senatorial districts.
“The scheme will enhance the ability of the RBDAs to package their water services with the provision of complementary basic rural infrastructure and improved agricultural support services.”
Engr. Adamu stressed that, “the main objective of this scheme is massive job creation for the youth with a year round agricultural production and other value chain activities such as processing, storage, markets, e-commerce.”
He therefore mandated the chief executive officers of the respective RBDAs to take charge and bring up a blueprint and a step by step approach for the implementation of this programme.
For his part, the Managing Director, Lower Niger River Basin, Engr. Jimoh Afolayan appreciated the Minister for deeming it fit to enter into the agreement.He said they are ready to work and ensure that all the necessary things needed for the programme to succeed will be provided.
It should be recalled that there are 12 River Basins in the country; Anambra-Imo, Benin-Owena, Chad basin, Cross River Basins, Lower Benue, Niger Delta, Ogun-Osun, Upper Niger, Lower Niger, Sokoto Rima and Hadejia-Jam’are basins.
