Owing to the incessant cases and reports of Violence Against Children, VAC, the national association of woman journalist, NAWOJ FCT Chapter, has advocated for a special court that will try rape cases in the country.
Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Comrade Felicia Chukwurah who lead a team of NAWOJ Exco members and women journalists to Karu market to sensitize women on the dangers of violence against children and especially rape on the girl-child, said that it is necessary to create awareness for market women and women at the grassroots to know that rape and all forms of violence against children is a societal ill that should be curbed and eliminated.
She said, ‘’ we have come to let the women know that it is expected of them to protect their children because children have a right to be protected, particularly now that Nigeria is a signatory to the United Nations, UN, Agreement on child’s right to protection.
We want to make them know that children are our future and whatever we give them is a legacy, especially education.
Government can help in curbing this menace by giving every child quality and free education at all levels, because there is nothing you can give to a child if you don’t train him or her properly.
‘’Education is one of the palliatives that government can give to children for them to become useful in future.”
‘’Violators are very close to the victims, for example, you hear of fathers violating their daughters, uncles, elderly men raping minors and even siblings sleeping with each other which sometimes lead to death”, she noted.
