Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has advocated that public primary school competitions would improve the performance of pupils and the standard of education in the state.
Lalong, who stated this in Jos at the Grand Finale of the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB’s Public Primary Sports competitions, promised that his administration is doing everything possible to improve the education sector in the state; said the competition would encourage the pupils to work hard so that they are recognised in these competitions, adding that the gesture would also be replicated in also the Public secondary schools.
Represented by the Commissioner for Secondary education, Joseph Maigari, the governor said that academic environment which included extra-curricular activities imbibe in students the attribute of being successful in all their engagements because of the existing reward system.
Meanwhile, the Plateau Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Prof. Mathew Sule, said the non-existence of sports in Public primary schools has deprived children opportunities of remarkable physical, emotional and social growth.
He said the Public primary school sector in the State had over several decades been denied the opportunity to engage in meaningful sports and extra -curricular opportunities despite its tremendous benefits.‘’ Sports influence on world peace, economy and development of social relationship cannot be overestimated, there is an assertion that it exerts more influence on people’s behaviour than politics, ‘’ he said.
He said extra-curricular activities formed the commencement of formal learning, saying the competition which also featured Quiz, arts and craft exhibition, essay writing and debate and sport competitions would serve as a solid foundation for the holistic development of the children.
Sule said the board would ensure the Sports competition became annual so that children were equipped with relevant skills and sound minds.
