Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, who chaired the sixth monthly meeting of operators in the electricity industry, recently issued a communiqué in furtherance of identifying, discussing and finding practical solutions to issues facing the Nigeria’s electricity supply.
Mr. Fashola issued the communiqué at the end of the 6th monthly meeting of the Ministry with operators of the Power Sector, held on recently, at Kumbotso Transmission Station, Kano State.
Various issues were deliberated at the meeting as they acknowledged the need to put in place a more robust mechanism on information sharing between the Ministry, the GenCos and the DisCos, as it was revealed that the public still refers operational issues to the Federal that are better directed to GenCos and Discos for operational action.
The meeting sympathised with the victims of electrocution under Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, and commended the company for prompt compensation to the victims.
Also, there were deliberations on safety rankings presented by NERC and NEMSA (the regulators) which will henceforth be circulated monthly.
For the month of May, Port Harcourt DisCo was commended for ranking first in safety, while full ranking for metering, loss reduction and service delivery will be published in July 2016.
In furtherance of aggressive metering plans, the meeting commended Kano DisCo for the launch of 68,000 out of its 100,000 meter roll out plan for 2016. All DisCos agreed to use all available media including social media to let the public know all the work being done to roll out metering.
The meeting recognized the need for the DisCos to reinvigorate their efforts to replace obsolete transformers and deploy new ones as necessary.
