UNICEF and the Zamfara State government have signed the 2016 joint Annual Work Plan, AWP, to gulf over N2.3 billion towards intervention in four health sectors and education in the state.
The Chief of UNICEF Sokoto Field Office, Mr. Mohammed Muhiuddin, said, with the timely release of the funds, especially by the state government, the rights of all children and women to survival, development, protection and participation would be accelerated.
He said the intervention would cover the sectors of health, water, education, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene and stated that under the arrangement, there would be high impact on all the sectors as well as improved access to quality basic education, especially to the most vulnerable boys and girls.
He further noted that, it would ensure increased school retention and completion rate.
He lamented that the state was still backward in addressing infants mortality, stunting and underweight among children, antenatal care and provision of water and sanitation which he said, were unacceptable to UNICEF and further revealed that, under the 2016 work plan, the state government would contribute N755, 686, 120 while UNICEF would contribute over N1.5 billion.
In his response shortly after signing the document on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi assured that the state government would not fail in its responsibilities.
He said “despite our lean resources and low income both internally and from our federal receipts, I want to assure you that we will meet up this obligation for the benefit of our people.”
