Exactly a week after some suspected militants killed no fewer than fifteen persons in Ogijo area of Ogun State, about thirty people are feared dead in Elepete, Igbo Olomun, a border town between Lagos and Ogun State.
The incident, which happened late Thursday night, was reported to have claimed the lives of the victims who were majorly landlords while keeping vigil over incessant armed robbery attacks in the community.
The victims were reported to have made bonfires at strategic points to wade-off invasion of the community by militants and armed robbers.
They were, however, reportedly attacked by the suspected militants who mistook them for security agents.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that residents of the community have fled the area for fear of further attack, adding that about 30 dead bodies have been identified.
The source said, “they attacked the communities around 11p.m on Thursday night. We were outside keeping vigil over incessant armed robbery attacks. We had bonfires in some areas and the militants, having sighted the bonfires, opened fire on anyone on sight.
“They came out from the creek. The whole communities have already been deserted. We need the presence of the Nigerian Army, Airforce and Navy to curtail the excesses of these militants.”
Another eye witness explained that all business activities have been paralysed in the area, confirming that the area was deserted by residents.
When contacted, the Police Public Relation Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident but explained that only two persons died.
Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police, who said the militants came from the creek and had laid siege on the community before the attack, assured that the police would ensure the arrest of the fleeing militants.
