Eight illegal refineries were destroyed while tonnes of illegally refined Oil products were seized by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, Edo State command in the last two months.
The Commandant of the NSCDC in the state, Mr. Walter Akubuiroh, speaking at a press conference in Benin the state capital, said nine suspects were arrested in connection with the illegal activities.
Akubuiroh also said the suspects operating the illegal refineries were arrested at locations at Obazagbon, near Ehor in Uhumwode local government area of the state.
In the process he said over 53, 640 liters of adulterated Automotive Gas Oil, AGO was recovered from those engaged in vandalisation of oil pipelines in the state.
The NSDSC boss said the AGO recovered was concealed in 21 20-liter drums, 9 20-liter jerry cans, as well as 45,000 litres oil tanker with a registration no AWK 844 XJ.
“The drums and jerry cans were being conveyed by five J5 buses which were all arrested at different times and locations in the state. We are amazed by the activities of these people, because the more we destroy, the more they go back to their illegal business”.
He added, “This illegal activities is seen or believe to have been supported by highly placed network of people in the society. We are not afraid of them; we will fight them to submission”.
He added that there were already being investigated and would be charged to court at the end of all investigations.
Akubuiroh Also explained that besides these eight refineries, his men had destroyed four other illegal refineries in parts of the state in April.
