Newly appointed Auditor General for Local Governments in Rivers State, Mr Friday Beema has promised to ensure regular presentation of financial reports from the 23 local government councils in the state to the state Assembly
Beema gave the promise shortly after being screened and confirmed as the Auditor General for local governments by the Rivers State House of Assembly at an emergency sitting.
The Auditor-General, who fielded questions shortly after the screening from Assembly Press Corps, said as a professional, he would be guided by the ethics of his profession, audit laws and public service rules to carry out his duties.
Beema, who hails from Gokana Local Government Area, has been functioning as auditor-general for local governments in acting capacity for about eight months before his name was forwarded to the Assembly by Governor Nyesom Wike for screening and confirmation.
He said he would submit his first audit report to the Assembly in the next six months, disclosing that he was already working on the reports.
“For the system to move forward, somebody must make some sacrifices. If we do it the way they were doing in the previous years we cannot move forward, so somebody must go out of his way to make necessary sacrifices to make the system work even as our governor is doing,” he stated
Fielding questions earlier from lawmakers, Beema submitted that fraud incidences could only be minimised from the institutions with the support of the legislature, arguing that nobody could eliminate fraud from any system.
Commenting, Speaker Adams Dabotoru Dima advised him to discharge his duty with utmost discipline in a way and manner that would move the state forward and to also ensure sanity in the local government councils’ financial system.
