The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ekiti said on Tuesday that it had arrested 33 suspects over the cultivation of Indian hemp between January and February.

The State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr Suleiman Jadi, told NAN in Ado-Ekiti that the suspects were arrested at various locations in the state.

He said officials of the agency effected the arrests at different farms and beer parlours within and outside the state capital.

Jadi said that 16 of the suspects were arrested in January while 17 were nabbed in February.

He also said that 7.35kg of Indian hemp was impounded in January while 93.45kg was seized in February.

“The command is putting all necessary logistics in place to arrest more suspects while we have intensified our surveillance operation in the 16 local government areas of the state,” he said.

He said the agency was determined to uncover more Indian hemp farms, adding that nine farms had been discovered in the state in the last three years.

Jadi, however, urged residents of the state to give useful information to the agency in order to tackle illicit drug use.
