Operatives of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, western Nigeria, have arraigned a couple, Kunle Richard Shoroye, 54, and his wife Christiana Yetunde Shoroye, 49, before a Lagos Magistrates’ court for allegedly obtaining the sum of N1,560,000 from Kingsley Igwe under false pretence.
The accused persons, from Ogun State, western Nigeria, were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a five-count charge of felony to wit: stealing.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Marcus Okon, informed the court in charge No. M/14/2015 that the accused persons committed the offence sometime in February and March 2014 at Meiran area of Lagos State.
Okon told the court that the first accused, Kunle Shoroye, obtained the sum of N1,400,000 from Kingsley Igwe to secure a shop for him along Lafenwa Roundabout, Itele, Ota, Ogun State, a claim he knew to be false.
He said the accused failed to provide the shop for the complainant and also failed to refund the money before he reported the matter to the police.
Okon further said the second accused, Christiana Yetunde Shoroye, also obtained the sum of N165,000 from the complainant to supply 100 bags of cement to him but she also failed to supply the cement.
Okon noted that the offences the accused persons committed are punishable under sections 409, 312 and 285 of criminal laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the police allegation in the open court and Magistrate, Mrs. F. Dalley, admitted them on bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Dalley adjourned the case till 14 July, 2015 for mention, while the defendants were taken to Ikoyi and Kirikiri prisons respectively when they could not fulfil their bail conditions before the court closed proceedings for the day.
