Forty five people, including three Kenyan trainers from the AU peacekeeping mission to Somalia, have been wounded in a suicide car bombing at a military training base in southern Somalia.
Somali Defence Minister, Abdulkadir Sheikh-Dini, confirmed this in Mogadishu on Sunday.
He said the death toll in the bombing at a military training base in Kismayo, southern Somalia, had risen to 20.
Sheikh-Dini said the car rammed into the base in the southern port town of Kismayo on Saturday.
The minister said a helper of the bomber, who got out of the car before it exploded was captured and shot dead.
Sheikh-Dini called it a cowardly terrorist act.
Meanwhile, Maman Sidikou, Head of the AU Mission to Somalia, has condemned the attack and vowed that the mission would not relent in any of its activities to ensure peace and stability in the country.
“We will continue with the momentum to rebuild Somali national army and other security institutions until the country becomes self-reliant in that regard.
Al-Shabaab Commander, Sheikh Hudeyfa, in his reaction to the attack, said the suicide bombing was carried out in retaliation for a recent government and AU military offensive against the insurgent group. …Read More
