Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State Governor
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday said his administration would reposition the state’s tertiary institutions to become active global players.
Ambode spoke at the inauguration of the Governing Councils of tertiary institutions in the state at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the institutions include Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) and Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED).
Others are Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Epe, and Lagos State College of Health Technology.
Ambode said that the state government had resolved to consciously build a new foundation for the tertiary institutions.
“Since the inception of this administration, it has been inundated with the multi-faceted challenges plaguing tertiary institutions in the state.
“Lamentations have never and will not solve these problems.
“Taking the concrete steps with the right people driving the process is the only way these seemingly gargantuan challenges can be surmounted,” he said.
The governor described the appointments as a challenge and call to duty.
According to him, it is part of the process of restoring the lost glory of the institutions by instilling discipline, integrity, accountability and responsibility.
Ambode urged the appointees to be focused in formulating policies and programmes that would reposition the institutions to achieve their mandates of providing quality teaching, research and community relevance and service.
He noted that their professional antecedents and records of service to their respective organisations and the nation had placed them in vantage positions to lead and reposition the institutions.
He said that the issue of labour relations and clearance of all outstanding issues relating to staff, especially issues on conditions of service must be of utmost importance to them.
