Mexican players celebrate after scoring a goal against Ecuador
Mexico has been named as Nigeria’s opponents in the semi-final match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be played in Concepcion, Chile on Thursday.
The Mexicans booked the date with Nigeria after thrashing Ecuador 2-0 on Monday night, with goals by Claudio Zamudio in the 41st minute and a second goal by B. Bryan Salazar, via a penalty at 55th minute.
Though Ecuador had 51 per cent of possession and attacked more than their opponents, recording 16 goal attempts to Mexico’s seven, they could not convert any.
The Mexicans have not been beaten in the tournament so far. At the group stage, they beat Argentina 2-0, drew goalless with Australia and also beat Germany 2-1.
In the Round of 16, the Mexicans had the distinction of sending the home team, Chile out of the competition, walloping them 4-1.
Nigeria, the defending champions, led their Group A, with six points, losing a match to Croatia. In the Round of 16, Nigeria saw off the Australians 6-0.
The Golden Eaglets also emphatically qualified for the semi-final, on Sunday beating Brazil 3-0, with goals from Victor Osimhen, Kingsley Michael and Udochukwu Anumudu, all within five minutes in the first half, in the match played at Estadio Sausalito Vina Del Mar.
Mali, the African champions will know their semi-final opponent at the end of the match between Belgium and Costa Rica. …Read More
