Nigeria’s supreme court on Friday upheld the election of Samuel Ortom as governor of Benue State in a ruling that lasted less than 10 minutes.
The court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Sylvester Nguta dismissed the appeal of Terhemen Tazoor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the April 11, 2015 governorship election.
The PDP candidate argued that Ortom was not a member of the All Progressives Congress as at the time he emerged the party’s governorship candidate.
Tazoor had approached the supreme court to reverse the judgment of Benue State Governorship Election Petition which ruled that Ortom was qualified to contest the April governorship election in the state.
While insisting that Ortom was not validly nominated by APC to stand for the election, the PDP governorship candidate had sought a declaration by the supreme court to set aside the appellate court’s judgment which had dismissed his petition for lack of merit.
He also asked the court to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare him winner of the April governorship poll. …Read More
