Former Nigeria international, Taribo West says nobody should hold Chief Coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, responsible for the early ouster of the home-based Eagles from the ongoing Rwanda 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Nigeria failed to make it past the first round of 2016 CHAN after they won one game against Niger, drew one against Tunisia and lost the last group match against Guinea in the preliminary round.
Taribo, former Inter Milan of Italy defender, said “Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should not make Oliseh a scapegoat after Nigeria failed woefully in Rwanda. I understood that Oliseh complained of shoddy preparation of the team before the championship and nothing was done by the NFF.
“The NFF should take the blame and leave Oliseh alone. The coach should be made to continue his job. I think he should see Nigeria through the Nations Cup and the World Cup qualifiers. The football authority put Oliseh on the job and they are supposed to give him all necessary support to succeed.”
The former Super Eagles defender faulted the NFF for even giving Oliseh the job of coaching the Super Eagles, adding that he would have loved to see Daniel Amokachi, who was assistant to erstwhile handler of the Eagles, Stephen Keshi, to take over as the head coach.
“I preferred Amokachi instead of Oliseh. Amokachi was the best candidate for the Eagles job and should have gotten the job ahead of Oliseh originally,” he said.
Former coach of the Eagles, Christian Chukwu, however, faulted Oliseh for pouring out his displeasure over the plight of his team before and during their campaign at the Rwanda 2016 CHAN.
After Nigeria crashed out in CHAN, Oliseh went public, telling Nigerians that lack of motivation was largely responsible for the team’s early crash from the championship.
