The police at the Bar Beach Division, Victoria Island, Lagos, western Nigeria, have arrested two businessmen, Musa Nura Abdulahi, 38, and Abubakar Musa, 38, for allegedly obtaining the sum of £20,000 from their friend and business partner, Rabiu Hamisu, under false pretence.
Police alleged the suspects were ordered to be arrested by the Divisional Police officer in charge of Bar Beach Division, CSP Segun Ajamolaya, following a complaint by Rabiu Hamisu that the suspects pleaded with him to borrow them the sum of £20,000 to transact business with a promise to refund the money the same day.
The complainant told the police that after he gave the money to the suspects on trust, they came back to inform him that armed robbers ha snatched the money from them.
After investigation by Inspector Sunmoni Rotimi and his team, the suspects were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates` court, Lagos on a two-count charge of felony to wit, obtainig money under false pretence and stealing.
Police prosecutor, Cyriacus Osuyi, informed the court in charge No I/08/2016 that the accused persons committed the alleged crime on 27 January, 2016 at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Osuyi told the court that the accused persons borrowed the sum of £20,000 from the complainant to trasact business with a promise to refund it. But instead, they converted the money to their use.
He said the offences the accused committed are punishable under sections 409 and 285(7) of the criminal law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime in the open court and Magistrate, Mr H. O. A. Amos admitted them to bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two surties each in like sum.
