General Yakubu GowonA former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has again urged Nigerians to continue to be united in spite of their religious or political differences.
“Nigerians should continue to emulate the past leaders’ teachings and ensure that they preserve the country for the coming generation,” he said on Saturday at the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Federal Government College, Sokoto.
“It is only by sustaining the past leaders’ initiatives on the need for unity of Nigerians that the nation will get the desired development.
“Our past leaders and fore-fathers initiatives’ hinged on living in peace and harmony irrespective of our political, ethnic or religious differences.
“So, our youths should always emulate the examples of those leaders who fought for the country’s independence,” he added.
Gowon called on youth to always engage in developmental activities that would take the country to greater heights.
The former Head of State appealed to Nigerians to always pray for the nation, the leaders and for world peace.
“We will be able to get a better society and a better leadership in the country.”
The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who was represented by the Director, Human Resources and Development in the ministry, Dr Bello Umar, said the Federal Government had made efforts to reposition the federal colleges across the country.
‘“All Federal Colleges in the country had been provided modern facilities.
“These efforts are also being made in 2016 budget to accommodate projects and programmes that will support the revamping of the colleges to enable them to serve as models and pacesetters.
“The training and retraining of teachers are also very dear to the heart of the government to ensure that our teachers remain vibrant and to deliver quality education.”
Adamu warned that the ministry had zero- tolerance for “bullying, flogging and brutalizing of students which adds no value to their total education”.
