The Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO), micro finance bank, says it has empowered over 900,000 Nigerian women through various poverty alleviation programmes since its inception in 1987.
The Executive Director of the bank Mrs. Sabina Idowu-Osehobo, who revealed this Thursday during the 2016 LAPO International Women’s Day celebration in Benin City, said the organization has been channeling its energy and resources into processes that promote gender parity, spending more on programmes directed at empowering and lifting women and girls from the grip of poverty, ignorance and disease.
The 2016 World International Women’s Day celebration has as its theme, “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for Gender Equality.”
Speaking on the sub theme, “Advancing Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women,” Mrs. Idowu-Osehobo explained that a total of 586,000 women benefited from the organization’s social and health empowerment services in 2015, which she said has led to significant improvement in their standard of living.
She also said that a total of 3,247 women were sensitized on the dangers and solutions associated with female sexual abuse and rendered free legal aid services to 31 women which include rape cases in 2015.
According to the Executive Director of LAPO, in 2013, the organization instituted the LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award which identifies and honours women who have recorded milestone achievements in diverse endeavours. …Read More
