Dutse Residents decry 100 per cent increase in price of sachet water

Sachet waterResidents of Dutse in Jigawa on Sunday decried sudden increment in prices of sachet water also known as “pure water” in the state.
A cross section of residents who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said 100 per cent increment was unreasonable.
Malam Dauda Ismail told NAN that a bag of sachet water had risen from N60 to N120.
Ismail explained that though he didn’t know why the sudden increase, but that sachet water was the only he could afford and was not supposed to go beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Another resident who gave his name as Usman Abba said that the producers of sachet water deliberately increased the prices because of high demand due to the hot weather.
Abba noted that a sachet water he used to buy for N5 was now N10.
Adamu Salisu, another resident appealed to government to intervene and help to control the prices of packaged water.
He stated that the producers were taking consumers for granted because of necessity of the product.
Reacting, the State Chairman of Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), Alhaji Umar Baba-Yaro said that the major material used in producing the water had been increased by more than 100 per cent.
Baba-Yaro explained that the price of a tone which was N550, 000 in December 2015 increased to N750, 000 in February.
According to him, the price of nylon had also risen from N750, 000 to N1.3 million in March.
“With this latest development, we cannot maintain the old price of N60 per bag.
“Nylon alone takes about 50 per cent of the cost of production, that is why we are left with no other choice than to increase the price,”he said. …Read More
