The United States Consulate-General in Lagos has initiated a discussion for security stakeholders in the state to reduce crime and violence in Lagos communities.

The U.S. Consul-General in Lagos, Mr John Bray, said in a statement that the consulate had a roundtable discussion with the Oba of Lagos and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police on the issue.

The statement also listed others at the roundtable to include the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, leaders of civil society groups and the security agencies, as well as heads of the transport unions.

According to it, the participants discussed best practices for peace-building, as well as a vision for ensuring safer communities in the state.

The statement said that the roundtable was also aimed at strengthening partnerships between youths and the police in the prevention of crime and violence in their communities.

“They met for an exploratory discussion to reduce violence in Lagos and encourage non-violent resolution of disputes, as well as improve opportunities for the youth.

“The participants shared best practices for peace-building, their vision for safer communities, and ways of further strengthening partnerships between the youth and the police.

“We sought to spark a dialogue for leaders in law enforcement, government, civil society, trade unions and culture, to generate ideas that could improve safety and security for the citizens,” it said.

Bray urged the stakeholders to sustain discussions and meetings on making Lagos a crime and violent-free state.
